I'm not a critic, I'm a fan. I had the privilege of being invited to a special screening of Marvel's The Avengers a week before it opens nation wide across the US. Everyone is already talking about this movie and will continue to do so in the weeks to come. However, what I can add to the conversation comes from me, not a movie critic or a paid endorser. Best way to some up this movie? I'll quote two people whose opinions I hold in high regards and break each quote down from there.
Tonight's event opened with a short speech and sketch by Marvel's Chief Creative Officer Joe Quesada which is where I got my first quote from. He actually nailed it when he said that we were invited to watch "a little movie called the Avengers." Why little? Look beyond the budget, the costumes, the sets and the special effects and you will find a "little" story about the relationships between people. We all don't always get along. We behave at our best and speak appropriately in public, but we all know that behind closed doors every relationship has tension.
New York City Premiere of the Amazing Spider-Man
Its a hot night in New York City. Midtown, just north of Times Square. As I make my way to the Ziegfield with my 8 year old son, I can't help but think how this all must look from his perspective. This year, Spider-Man marked 50 years since he made his first appearance in a comic book, Amazing Fantasy #15 by Stan Lee and Steve Ditko. Many people around the world have there personal story growing up with Spider-Man, and my own story spans 3 generations. My late cousin, Santiago DeJesus loved reading and drawing Spider-Man. It was the 1970s and he critiqued my big brother's illustrations and encourage mine. I grew up in New York City, the same city Peter Parker swung through every day to school, the Daily Bugle and to save the day. What I love about Marvel is that New York City has always been a prominent cast member in the stories. That's why walking over to the New York Premiere of The Amazing Spider-Man I couldn't help but think how cool it would be if Spidey had just swung by before the movie started.
Making Comics with DMC
Last year my good friend Rigg Morales brought me face to face with one of my favorite hip-hop artists of all time, Darryl DMC McDaniels of Run DMC. I listened to Run DMC in junior high school and wore Adidas outfits in high school. Having the chance to work with DMC to make a comic book would fulfill two dreams in one shot. The three of us and DMC's manager Erik Blam came together under DMC's leadership to start our very own imprint.
1 1/2 years later we finished our first full length graphic novel and I'm so proud of the work that all of these artists produced under our new publishing company Darryl Makes Comics. It's a start-up, or as we call it, a labor of love. I still run Somos Arte designing websites, branding, producing advertorials and all the other fantastic services we offer, but I also take time when I'm not building Lego set's with my son or visiting art galleries with my fiancé to work on this amazing project.
I don't know whatever happened to those comics I drew back in the 1980s, but I can tell you that I still have my childhood collection of comics in plastic bags that I refer to now ever so often as I help DMC build this new comic book universe of ours.
I wouldn't have it any other way because it's like that and that's the way it is.
Sobre Arte Blog
Writing about art and design. That is what this blog is all about. At Somos Arte, our approach to our work can be compared to the work of an artist creating a new masterpiece. Here you will read about our technique and you will also get insight that will help you with your next project. At times we will also discuss current trends in design, web, video and art and how they relate to our studio and our work.
